What is a rehab centre and how does it work?
A rehab centre is a licensed treatment facility that helps people regain their health, relationships and independence by giving structured medical, psychological and social support to recover from addiction to drugs, alcohol or other substances. It works in four stages: assessment and intake, medically supervised detoxification, therapy and counselling, then aftercare planning to protect long-term sobriety. Most residential programmes in South Africa run for 28 to 90 days, and outpatient options let patients keep living at home while they recover.
The best chance at sustainable recovery comes from the right level of care. A common mistake is choosing a centre on location or price alone, before anyone has assessed what the patient actually needs. Get a professional assessment first, then match the programme to the person:
- Inpatient (residential) rehab: round-the-clock medical supervision and intensive therapy, usually for 28 to 90 days. It suits patients with severe addiction or those who have relapsed after earlier treatment.
- Outpatient rehab: day treatment or traditional counselling while you live at home. It suits people who cannot step away from work or family commitments.
- Intensive outpatient programmes (IOP): typically 9 to 20 hours of treatment a week, a middle ground between inpatient and standard outpatient care.
- Dual-diagnosis programmes: treatment for depression, anxiety or other mental health conditions alongside the addiction. These are needed when both are present.
Feeling physically safe again comes first. Detox is medically supervised and usually lasts 3 to 10 days, depending on the substance. Therapy follows, with individual sessions, group work, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing. Many centres add family counselling, art therapy or mindfulness meditation. Aftercare then carries recovery into everyday life through step-down outpatient care and support groups. This is the stage where long-term sobriety is built, so ask about it before admission.
Peace of mind about cost is possible for many families. Prices vary widely depending on the facility, the programme and the length of stay. Many medical aids cover addiction treatment under Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMB) regulations, and government-funded and free facilities also exist. Private centres must be registered with the Department of Social Development under the Prevention of and Treatment for Substance Abuse Act. Check that registration before you commit.
